About Paddy Keenan

Paddy Keenan was born in Trim, Co. Meath, to a Traveling family steeped in traditional music. Both his father and grandfather were uilleann pipers inn the flowing open-fingered style. Paddy himself took up the pipes at age ten, and played his first major concert at the Gaiety Theater, Dublin, when he was fourteen. He went on to play with the rest of his family in a group called The Pavees.

As a founding member of the hugely influential Bothy Band, Paddy helped change the face of Irish music in the 1970's. The band merged a driving rhythm section with traditional Irish tunes in ways that had never been heard before. Band mate Donal Lunny once described him as "the Jimi Hendrix of the pipes," his playing a driving force in the band and its music.

Paddy's style has continued to mature since the band broke up, and he has developed a substantial solo career. Now based in the United States, he has performed all over North America, as well as in Europe. His new album NA KEEN AFFAIR has been released on Hot Conya Records.

Generally acknowledged as the most accomplished uilleann piper performing today, Paddy is certainly one of the most brilliant musicians of his generation.
